JESUS THE WORD

By James MacDonald

1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was in the beginning with God. 3All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. —John 1:1-5

First John 1:1 says, “That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have looked upon, and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life.” John starts out his first letter just like he started out his gospel.

Now I did not get this until this week. It’s so great to study God’s Word and learn new things.  Why does John call Jesus the Word in both John 1:1 and in 1 John 1:1? Why, in Revelation 19:13, does John also say that Jesus’ name is “the Word of God”? Looks to me like a pattern with a lesson.

I might see someone at church every week. But if I want to get to know someone, I’ve got to hang out with them. We can’t just only meet at church. If we did sit down and have coffee, what would be the first thing that we would do? We would start talking. I’d ask, “Tell me a little bit about yourself.” And he would ask me some questions too.

But here’s the point: All of the intimacy that would grow between us would be the result of words! Words would be the thing that would make it happen. We would exchange some words which are the currency of disclosure; disclosure leads to intimacy. So if I wanted to get to know you better, there would need to be some words. Likewise if you wanted to get to know me better—words.

God wanted to get to know you and me better. And God wanted us to know Himbetter. So He sent the Word. He disclosed in a big way! Jesus is the Word that comes forth from God’s mouth so you could know Him and so He could know you. Do you get it? This was new for me. Now every time I’m seeing Jesus called the Word, I’m like, “That’s God talking to me.”

Hebrews 1 says, “Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke . . . but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son.” That’s what it means when it says Jesus is the Word. He wants to speak into your life. You have to have a personal experience with Him if you’re going to know Him completely.

What words of Jesus can I meditate on today that will allow Him to speak into my life?

How can I make meditating on His Word a daily occurrence?

Prayer – Father in heaven, Your Son and His words are the Bread of life to me. Let me never tire of taking them in and relishing how they renew my mind and transform my life. I want to mean Jesus when I quote Psalm 119:11, “I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” I pray this in the name of Jesus who gave His life for me. Amen.
